Get to Know the Artwork Itself
Step 3: Get to Know the Artwork Itself
Once you are in the gallery, it is time to connect with the art.
Do not hesitate to ask questions! Engaging with the gallery staff can provide you with valuable insights about the artwork and the artists.

Artwork Knowledge
What inspired the artist? How was the piece created? What is the story behind this artwork?
These pieces of information can give you insight into the artist’s intentions and a deeper appreciation for the piece.
Understand the Medium
What is the artwork made of? Is it an oil painting, a sculpture, a photograph, a mixed-media piece?
Understanding the medium can give you insight into the artist's process and the care required for the piece.

Edition Information (for Prints/Multiples)
If you are looking at prints, photographs, or sculptures that are produced in editions, make sure you understand the edition size (e.g., 1/100 means it is the first print out of an edition of 100).
Lower edition numbers or smaller edition sizes can sometimes be more desirable.
