Ask About the Price and What It Includes
Step 8: Ask About the Price and What It Includes
Discussions about money can sometimes feel awkward, but when buying art from an art gallery, it is essential to be clear on the financial aspects.
Understanding the gallery's pricing structure can also help you make informed decisions.
The pricing of art can seem mysterious, but do not be shy about asking for a breakdown.

Transparent Pricing
Art galleries should be transparent about their pricing and pricing practices (i.e. based on artist’s experience, market demand, the size of the artwork, or the medium of the piece, etc.).
Do not hesitate to ask for the price, and whether shipping costs and local taxes (i.e. in Singapore, Goods & Services Tax) are already included in the price.
Inquire About Framing/Installation
Does the price include framing? Does the gallery offer installation services or advice?
These are practical considerations that can add to the overall cost.
Payment Options & Shipping
Discuss payment plans if needed and clarify shipping logistics if you are not taking the art with you immediately.
This is especially important for larger pieces or fragile media like glass and ceramics.
Some art galleries offer full-service delivery and installation—do not be afraid to ask.
The Sales Agreement
Make sure you receive a detailed sales agreement or invoice that clearly outlines the artwork, artist, price, any included services, and the gallery's return or exchange policy. Read it carefully!
Negotiate
Do not be afraid to discuss pricing with the gallery staff. They may be open to negotiation, especially if you are purchasing multiple pieces.
