Sampaguita, Interrupted speaks to the paradox explored in the work, how beauty, devotion, strength, and restriction coexist within cultural identity, particularly in the experience of women in the Philippines. In this work, the sampaguita, a symbol of purity, devotion, and feminine grace, emerges within a field of restless abstraction. Long celebrated in Filipino culture as an emblem of beauty and virtue, the flower becomes here both icon and question.
Layered gestures evoke the complex tensions that shape the experience of women in the Philippines. While femininity is revered and idealized in cultural imagery, women’s autonomy remains constrained by deeply rooted traditions and religious structures. The sharp, dark lines that traverse the composition suggest these invisible forces, social expectations, moral codes, and historical pressures, that intersect and sometimes fracture the space around the flower. The work does not resolve this tension; instead, it holds it. Soft greens and fluid brushstrokes evoke growth, resilience, and the quiet persistence of life, while the flower’s pale form remains both luminous and vulnerable within the surrounding web. Created in celebration of International Women’s Day.
