Artist Statement

In this painting of the iconic Tong Ah Building, I am not trying to paint the building exactly as it is. I wanted to show the energy, memories, and movement around this familiar Singapore landmark. The loose black brushstrokes and splashes create a feeling of rhythm, as if the city is alive and always changing.

The horizontal and vertical colour blocks add a modern touch to the painting. They move through the expressive brushstrokes like parts of buildings, traffic, reflections, and city life. These geometric forms give the work a contemporary feel and create a layered urban atmosphere, turning the familiar street scene into a more emotional and expressive interpretation of the city.

Chun Wee Ping is a Singaporean artist whose practice centres on Chinese ink and watercolour, balancing an interplay between strength and softness, control and spontaneity. Her works have been exhibited internationally and recognised in art competitions across Singapore and Japan.

TOGETHER - Art Exhibition in support of the President’s Challenge 2026

This is the third edition of the largest fund-raising exhibition by Singaporean artists for beneficiaries supported by the President's Challenge (PC). President's Challenge 2026 will support 121 programmes across 60 organisations to drive sustained social upliftment in Singapore.

50% of all sales proceeds will be donated to the President's Challenge; tax deductions will be available where applicable. Donors will be invited to the "Donor Appreciation Ceremony" to receive a certificate of appreciation from the Guest-of-Honour.
