Back to the Ashes II explores the tension between the familiar and the unknown. It follows a young woman standing at a crossroads, drawn toward the promise of a glittering new palace while also confronting the pull of a place she already knows—a place that offers both safety and suffering.
Inspired by Jungian archetypes of the Maiden and the Virgin, the work reflects a moment of transformation: the passage from innocence toward self-determination. Through movement, the figure appears caught between different futures, navigating uncertainty, desire, fear, and memory.
The fireplace serves as a central symbol. It represents destruction and renewal, danger and comfort, embodying the paradox of returning to what is familiar even when it no longer serves us. The work asks a question many of us face at different stages of life: when standing at a threshold, do we choose the safety of the known or the possibility of the unknown? This is a question many immigrants face when they move to a new country, reflecting on the Chinese diaspora and the artist's personal journey.
